Karen Morrison is an award-winning beauty and fashion film director, executive producer, journalist, founder of MODTV, and former Contributing Editor at Allure, Condé Nast. Best known for pioneering digital, behind-the-scenes, and vérité-style storytelling, she documents the creative process behind the world’s leading fashion and beauty brands through backstage films, luxury beauty campaigns, and original documentaries.
For more than three decades Karen has filmed backstage, front row, and runway at the world’s most iconic fashion shows, capturing designer and model interviews, hair and makeup artistry, and the intimate backstage moments rarely seen by the public. She specializes in fashion week backstage coverage, documenting the creative process behind runway collections during New York, Milan, and Paris Fashion Weeks.
Karen has created groundbreaking film series and interviewed some of the most influential figures in fashion, including John Galliano, Karl Lagerfeld, Tom Ford, Gisele Bündchen, Marc Jacobs, Donatella Versace, Miuccia Prada, Michael Kors, Anna Sui, and Valentino. She has directed behind-the-scenes brand films and global beauty campaigns for Tom Ford Beauty, L’Oréal Paris and Maybelline New York. She has documented the artistry of Dame Pat McGrath since 2000, directing and producing the Pat McGrath Labs Brand Essentials film and capturing her work backstage at Louis Vuitton, Maison Margiela, Miu Miu, and Valentino.
Karen Morrison directed and executive produced the award-winning Allure Backstage series with Linda Wells and produced the digital beauty series Allure The Look Of for Condé Nast. Allure Backstage received Webby Awards in 2012 and 2014 for Online Film & Video.
Karen Morrison launched her career in fashion media as the founding Series Producer of Fashion File, the acclaimed fashion television series narrated by Tim Blanks and broadcast worldwide. She later pioneered digital fashion storytelling with the MODTV Fashion Video Podcast, praised by Vogue UK, Harper’s Bazaar, and Highsnobiety for helping shape beauty and fashion video online.
More recently, Karen served as Consulting Producer on the Emmy Award-nominated docuseries Victoria’s Secret Angels & Demons, which licensed footage from her privately held Fashion Film Archive. Her archive has also been licensed for acclaimed documentaries Kingdom of Dreams and In Vogue: The 90s.
Karen Morrison continues to direct and produce films through MODTV, documenting the artistry of beauty and fashion through backstage stories, brand campaigns, and original documentaries.
As owner of the MODTV Fashion Film Archive, she curates one of the fashion industry’s most significant privately held collections of original backstage fashion films spanning the 1990s to the present.
