Fashion File
Founding Series Producer & Director KAREN MORRISON
Fashion File was a groundbreaking Canadian global fashion television series that documented the world of style with rare intimacy and access. Directed by founding Series Producer Karen Morrison, the series was narrated by Tim Blanks and broadcast on CBC Television in Canada, E! Entertainment TV in the U.S., and syndicated internationally.
Launched during the height of the 1990s supermodel era, Fashion File gave viewers an all-access backstage pass to Fashion Weeks in Paris, Milan, and New York. Karen Morrison led the series both editorially and creatively—writing the episodes, conducting interviews, and shooting with her Hi-8 camera in a vérité style that captured the unfiltered energy of fashion as it happened.
As the Series Producer, Morrison set Fashion File’s visual tone: a stark black-and-white aesthetic inspired by Brassaï’s photographs and D.A. Pennebaker’s documentary Don’t Look Back. The stylized 16mm film titles she directed, combined with her handheld Hi-8 backstage footage, defined the show’s cinematic signature and set it apart from other fashion coverage of the time.
Morrison owns the complete archive of the original Hi-8 footage she shot for the series. Her material has since appeared in acclaimed fashion documentaries including In Vogue: The 90s, Kingdom of Dreams, and Gucci: Sex, Money & Power.
