At Valentino’s Spring/Summer 2023 show in Paris, makeup artist Pat McGrath transformed the runway into a living canvas — where couture met conceptual art. Building on creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli’s vision of radical elegance and individuality, McGrath debuted what she called “the new naked”: flawless, imperceptibly perfected skin that radiated light and authenticity.
But the real statement came in the form of trippy, VLogo face tattoos — optical illusions meticulously painted across select models’ faces. The intricate linework, inspired by Valentino’s iconic print, extended over eyelids and lips, echoing the collection’s bold graphic codes. Each tattooed look took over five hours to execute, serving as a striking symbolic reimagination of the house’s identity. “A face tattoo twists the narrative,” McGrath explained. “It invites us to unbox a new approach to beauty.”
