Paul Hanlon is one of fashion’s rising stars; this 39-year-old Brit creates the looks for Moschino, Giambattista Valli and Louis Vuitton and Gucci.  There is always a sense of rebellion and uniqueness to what Paul Hanlon creates.

Paul Hanlon’s signature style is to celebrate individuality – he says he doesn’t like “cookie cutter” looks where every girl on the runway looks the same.

“I always want my hair to feel that it has an emotion to it. You question how the girl got there. People don’t know me for doing glamorous hair. I like to see hair that you don’t see the technique in it, and then you question how it got there, where the girl’s come from. So there is always a tension to it and there’s something broken about it. I like to do the kind of hair where you can make it a little more personal because everybody is different. And where I’m based, in London, there’s a punk attitude; there’s a slight rebelliousness to what we consider beautiful.”

Designer Giambattista Valli told us he cast Gigi Hadid in his Spring 2016 show because he felt she embodies the spirit of his woman, “She’s perfectly beautiful, and so stunning and so real“.

American born Gigi Hadid is 20 years old and is signed to IMG models and is a social media superstar with over 7.2 million Instagram followers.  She has appeared in Sports Illustrated and is one of the faces of Maybelline New York.  During the recent Spring 2016 fashion month, Gigi walked in some of the world’s hottest designer fashion shows including Anna Sui, Tommy Hilfiger, Versace and Balmain.

Backstage at Giambattista Valli Spring 2016 show supermodel Gigi Hadid speaks to us about body-shaming on social media and the impact of the bold viral post that she recently shared with her Instagram followers.  Hadid had received numerous negative comments on the popular social media app, with some criticizing her curves, slightly jumpy walk and reality show pedigree.  On September 28th she defended herself with a passionate, heartfelt post on her Instagram feed:

“No, I don’t have the same body type as the other models in shows… You can make up all the reasons you think I am where I am, but really, I’m a hard worker that’s confident in myself, one that came at a time where the fashion industry was ready for a change.” @GigiHadid

See the Paris Haute Couture Spring 2013 and go backstage at Dior, Versace and Giambattista Valli. This fashion video diary by Paris Vogue gives us an exclusive look backstage at the first day of shows including one of the most stunning collections by Raf Simmons for Dior.

The beauty look Pat McGrath and Guido Palau created for Dior was breathtaking. In this video interview Guido Palau said the hair look was inspired by Jean Seaberg, Janet Leigh and iconic actresses of today like Anne Hathaway.

Makeup artist Pat McGrath did a stunning red jeweled mouths on all the models which must have taken hours to do. As she explains, “the girls were coming out of a garden and Raf said he wanted the girls to look like flowers in a modern way.  We did a shimmer on top of the eyes.  Really it was about the burnt orange, pinks and rose colored encrusted mouths“. The Dior show was beyond beautiful as actress Jessica Alba admitted after the show “it was beautiful, sexy and modern”.

Défilés haute couture printemps-été 2013…

Giambattista Valli takes us inside his Spring Summer 2012 collection with top models Ginta Lapina and Jac at fashion week in Paris. “I love the reality of women” Valli explained to me after the show – “it’s all about natural beauty”.

Giambattista Valli is an Italian designer who was born in Rome, Italy. His collections both Ready to Wear and Haute Couture are shown in Paris.

For his Spring Summer 2012 Ready to Wear Collection Giambattista Valli was inspired by a mix of memories, cultures and an idea about a nomadic woman. “This woman is a traveller” explained Orlando Pita backstage, “there is a beach texture in the back, but we slicked it down on the front with gel, because the hair had to also look like she was coming out of the water”.

The makeup look Val Garland created was a healthy, athletic, androgynous girl. It’s all about a brushed up groomed eyebrow, a reflective color on the lid and lip balm on the lips”. As Giambattista explained, “if you feel beautiful, you don’t even need a hair do, that is the feeling”.

Allure Backstage Spring 2008 hair trendsMessy Updos. Proof that updos don’t have to be uptight: check out this season’s easy, undone buns. This season at show after show hair stylists loosened up the texture and gave the hair a more wispy quality. As Eugene Souleiman explained his idea for the hair at Dolce & Gabbana was in complete contrast to the makeup, “its something much much softer, drier, more sensual. It’s not a bun, it’s not a structured bun”.

What is great about this messy undo is you can do it, it does not take a lot of work. It actually uses the imperfection that most people have and takes that to its advantage as Eugene Souleiman confessed to us “there is absolutely no technique to this what so ever”.

The hair at Giambattista Valli was completely gorgeous – one of the best looks of the Spring 2008 season. Orlando Pita was the hair stylist at the show and explains that because of the volume in the clothes they wanted to do something up – “I try to let my hairdos, even like here be a little on the simple side and a little bit undone so it looks more like today”.
