On Friday afternoon, even with threats of a severe snowstorm about to hit the city – it was still a full house at his show on the Upper East side.
As Cara Delevingne told me backstage – “this is really the show that opens NY Fashion Week…Jason is such a sweet guy, I just love doing his show – it’s always so elegant but cool”. All of the models feel the same way about Jason – they adore him because he knows how to make each one of them feel beautiful.
Jason Wu is only 30 years old. In just 6 years since launching his business, he has become one of the most important designers working in American fashion. Originally born in Taipei, he was raised in Vancouver, Canada and he now owns a very successful design studio in New York. He is First Lady Michelle Obama’s designer of choice and made her inaugural gown, which helped put him on the international map.
For Fall 2013 Jason Wu celebrated the beauty of a woman – focusing on femininity and strength. As he explained to me “I really wanted to propose the idea of femininity as seen through my eyes – it wasn’t about a complex concept or overreaching idea – it was about the idea of a woman – feminine clothes that women want to wear“.

Michael Kors Fall Winter 2013 Collection is sexy, athletic and chic. As Michael explained backstage just moments before his show at New York Fashion week, “If you live an urban life it’s like being an athlete – life is fast and it’s all about movement. I really wanted to combine the quintessential uptown polish of NY, Paris and London and merge that with this athleticism, because why not have it all”.
The beauty look of Michael Kors Fall 2013 was inspired by the modern, graphic mood of the collection. Dick Page, Shiseido The Makeup Artistic Director, used a golden champagne eye shadow from the limited-edition Shiseido Eye Color Bar palette (which comes out this Fall) along the models’ cheekbones for a fresh glow, and to showcase the dramatic eye. The lip was a mix of the same pink cream shadow and Shiseido Perfect Rouge Lipstick in Fantasia. The high ponytail that Orlando Pita gave the models was 50’s meets 90’s – he wrapped latex around the base to give the sleek, bouncy ponytails an edge of sexiness.

Lucia Pieroni described the beauty look of the Missoni Spring 2013 show as “cosmic couture”. This girl has a “gorgeous ethereal aura about her”. Lucia gave the models a manga-inspired lip – “it’s super stamped on, blurred around the edges in a lipstick that is a custom mix of fluorescent hot pink and orange“.

Stella McCartney is one of our favorite designers, she is an incredible woman who instinctively understands how a cool girl wants to dress. Her fashion show is staged at the Paris Opera, one of the most beautiful historic locations in Paris which makes this and one of the must see events of Paris Fashion Week. Top models like Karlie Kloss, Arizona Muse and Joan Smalls walk in her runway show because they love Stella’s vibe and the her natural approach to beauty and style. For Spring Summer 2013 Stella McCartney wanted to keep the beauty look simple but chic. Hairstylist Eugene Souleiman did a minimal hair look and makeup artist Pat McGrath kept the focus on the eyes adding a line of turquoise green eyeliner. The fresh beauty look complimented Stella McCartney’s Spring 2013 collection that was athletic, graphic and green. “We had green in the collection so I wanted a dark green line” Stella explained backstage after the show. “For me, green is a specific message – it’s fresh, it’s direct, it’s straight to the point but at the same time it’s new”. The beauty look of Prabal Gurung’s Spring 2013 show – ethereal, light and a bit haunted. Makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury used Mac Cream Color Base in Luna on the cheekbones and eyelids to give the models a beautiful glow. Paul Hanlon said that Prabal wanted the girl to look more innocent this time, almost angelic, so he kept the hair clean and very simple. “It’s all about quality hair” this season.
Prabal Gurung’s Spring 2103 collection was inspired in part by the artist Anish Kappor. As Prabal explained to me backstage – it’s all about the dress, “what is sensual and sexy to me – are dresses that are not so body-con. The whole idea of giving freedom to women is really appealing right now“.
