Sam McKnight is a professional hair stylist and legend who's been working in fashion for 40 years. Sam was Princess Diana's stylist for seven years and he's styled every supermodel on the planet from Cindy Crawford to Kate Moss, who is also one of his closest friends.

"Sam has been doing this so long, he is a genius. He just flips his finger and the hair looks amazing", Gigi Hadid told us backstage at Balmain Spring 2017 collection in Paris.

Sam's new book "Hair by Sam McKnight', published by Rizzoli was released this week, it's a personal visual diary of his remarkable career, "it's forty years of fashion through hair".

Sam creates the looks for the biggest fashion runway shows in the world, including Chanel, Fendi, Balmain and DSquared2 and has been working with Karl Lagerfeld for the last decade. We've been filming backstage with Sam during that entire time and had the opportunity to produce this mini-documentary film about Sam McKnight for Allure Magazine. Featuring interviews with Karl Lagerfeld, Gigi Hadid, Cara Delevingne, Karlie Kloss and Doutzen Kroes.

Karl Lagerfeld takes us inside his Chanel Fall 2016/17 "Front Row Only" Ready to Wear Collection at Paris Fashion Week where all 3,000 guests were invited to sit front row. The decor was reminiscent of the salons at 31 Rue Cambon, where Gabrielle Chanel presented her designs.

"People complain they can't see the clothes because they are too far away; this season everyone is front row"  - Karl Lagerfeld.

We loved all the new accessories. Boaters, helmets and riding hats in tweed, felt or leather were fastened by straps adorned with byzantine crosses, pearls or camellias. Models walked down the runway in boots with horizontal lacing or loafers with heels that accentuated a modern attitude.  Witty accessories such as cat cuffs, emoticon jewelry, and bobbin and coat-hanger handbags punctuated the silhouette.

Post show, Karl Lagerfeld told us about the gorgeous beauty look of the show by Tom Pecheux, and why he loves working with the hottest "models of the moment" Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid.  Featuring interviews with Chanel ambassadress Willow Smith and music mogul Pharrell Williams.

On July 7th, 2016 Fendi will celebrate its 90th anniversary with a "haute fourrure" Couture show in Rome. Karl Lagerfeld has been Fendi's Creative Director for over 50 years and in our exclusive interview at his Fall 2012 Fendi fashion show, Karl Lagerfeld talks about his love of the iPad and fashion in the digital age.

The beauty look of Fendi's Fall 2012 collection has a dark, northern Victorian feel about it. Sam McKnight gave the models small tight braids and makeup artist Peter Philips kept the focus on the eyes with a feathered out white chalky eyeshadow that he feathered out on the eye. Chanel Spring Summer 2016 backstage with Karl Lagerfeld and supermodel Cara Delevingne in Paris. For Spring 2016 Karl Lagerfeld transformed the Grand Palais into a magnificent mock Chanel Airport complete with a baggage check, numbered gates, an arrivals board and baggage carts with double-C logos. Backstage post-show Karl explained why he was inspired by airports and the love of travel -

 "...even for expensive Ready-to-Wear and high fashion, you have to be inspired by daily life, clothes have to fit with the life of today, we are not creating something living in an ivory tower that has no relationship to reality "

We are in love with Karl's airport themed collection - especially all the chic accessories including the new Chanel "Coco Cabin Case" and the light up Velcro sandals. The beauty look at the show was all about the eyes - models came out wearing electric blue eyeshadow or giant mirrored sunglasses. DSquared2 Spring 2015 backstage with top models Coco Rocha and Daphne Groenveld at Milan Fashion Week.  Dean and Dan Caten's woman for spring is an arty New York girl.  The makeup look that Mac Cosmetics Gordon Espinet created is "a geeky girl playing dress up". Espinet piled on the mascara and Sam McKnight gave all the models a sleek ponytail - a perfect compliment to the chic graphic clothes.

Go backstage at DSquared2 Spring 2014 with Dean and Dan Caten, Lindsey Wixson, Catherine McNeil and Josephine Skriver at one of the hottest fashion shows at Milan Fashion Week. 

was the name designers Dean and Dan Caten gave to their 50's beach party themed show. The set for the DSquared2 Spring 2014 show was a Polynesian paradise complete with a sand runway, "we're storytellers, we're showmen and this is what gets us going" they said about their high production spectacle.

Makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury gave the models a gorgeous goddess glow and finished the look with Morange lipstick by Mac. Hair stylist Sam McKnight used plenty of Pantene Volume hair spray to create 50's inspired bouffant "Americana" hairdos.

Kiki Montrparnasse, the french model and actress was the inspiration for the beauty look makeup artist Peter Philips created.  Peter went for a deep purple on the lip and used Chanel Le Rouge Velvet lipstick in "La Provecante" and Chanel Vendeta on the nails to give the models "a rebelious, chic, sophisticated look".  Sam McKnight gave all the models a mohawk braid and then added a piece of dyed fox fur on top for a dramatic effect. The models looked so cool and had a savage, almost Mad Max look about them.

"Globalization" was the theme of Karl Lagerfeld's Chanel Fall 2013 show, one of the most exciting fashion shows of Paris Fashion Week.

As fashion editors and celebrity guests including Jessica Chastain, Mila Jovovitch and Vanessa Paradis entered the Grand Palais they were all awe-struck by of the magnificent 25-meter-high globe in the center of the room. The softly spinning planet was dotted with Chanel's iconic double C logo flags, marking the 300 locations where Chanel now has free standing boutiques in the world - a celebration of Chanel's 100 years in fashion and a testament to the power of this French luxury brand.

As Cara Delevingne told us backstage before opening the show working with Dean and Dan is a dream,  '"It's just about being sexy - they always want alot of energy,  and they just give it and your bring it - it's real team work".

The beauty look created by makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury and hair stylist Sam McKnight perfectly captured the look of supermodel 90's glamour.  As Charlotte explained backstage the DSquared2 Spring 2013 makeup look, "is very Peter Lindbergh 90's - it's an almond smoky eye with a strong arched brow, contoured face with Mac Spice Lip Liner and Fleshpot Beige lips".  Sam wanted the hair to look modern so he made it shiny and super straight.   The result was stunning - the girls looked sexy, cool and superhot.

Go backstage at Fendi Spring 2013 with designer Karl Lagerfeld, top model Cara Delevingne, makeup artist Peter Philips and hairstylist Sam McKnight.

Karl Lagerfeld always puts on a great show and his Fendi collections are always so modern, fresh and young. The inspiration for Fendi Spring 2013 was Memphis - the huge furniture movement of the 1980's.  To capture that spirt hair stylist Sam McKnight created sharp aerodynamic hair that perfectly complimented the geometric clothes.

Peter Philips makeup brief was to include the colors of the collection, so he used the fabrics from the collection and glued it under the eyes.   As designer Karl Lagerfeld explained backstage after the show "It's a total look. I have a vision - I have so many references in my mind - it's like a huge Google storage in my mind, it's  just something I felt.  It's something very Italian, very Milano".

Chanel Spring 2013 by designer Karl Lagerfeld was the hot ticket of Paris fashion week. The show was staged at the magnificent Grand Palais des Champs-Elysées, one of the most historic sites in France. From giant icebergs to the apocalypse, the themes of the sets are always extraordinary. At Chanel, you can expect to see an unforgettable fashion show and a look that pushes fashion forward.

For Chanel Spring 2013 Karl Lagerfeld brought a whole new energy and vibe - installing 12 giant wind turbines with a solar panel runway to make his point that it's time for a new mood of ease. With models wearing almost 100 different looks, there was an atmosphere of serenity and tranquillity on the enormous runway. The Chanel Spring 2013 collection was fresh, airy, light and modern.

As Karl explained after the show he wanted a Chanel collection that "you could identify in a second", but there were no braids, bows, no chains and no logos in sight. The show was incredibly optimistic and the set underscored Karl's vision of the future. "It's all about energy".

The Balmain girl always has a rock and roll vibe. Her clothes ooze sex and glamour which is why the beauty look at this show is always simple and chic.

For Fall 2010 makeup artist Tom Pecheux created a "perfected" no makeup look - perfect skin, eyes, lips, cheeks and eyebrows. Hairstylist Sam McKnight gave the models a 'polished natural" look. As Pecheux describes it, the result is 'perfectly naughty".
