Allure Backstage Spring 2008 - Gold Shadow. Bronzy-gold lids tempered with rich brown shadows add a glamorous touch to neutral makeup. At many of the shows makeup artists used shadows that were a bright yellowy gold or slightly bronzed. Gold really looks best at night and it can edge into day if it's a little toned down and not too sparkly, but it's a really great look for night and if you temper it with a little brown it's fantastic.

At Versace Pat McGrath used a combination of bronzed gold and a little brown and the result was very sunny woman, very Versace it looked a little bit like Donatella and she called the makeup blonde of course,   "The look is very luminescent - I want to see a girl who has light in her face".

Allure Backstage Spring 2008 makeup trends: Black Liner. Use a heavy hand to create deliberately imperfect, rock and roll eyeliner. Some makeup artists used the black eyeliner minimally just to give the eye a clear definition. But most used a heavy hand and went for deliberately imperfect result. Whenever you get a black liner in your hand you immediately connect it to rock and roll, and the messier it is and the rougher it looks the more rock and roll it looks.

Pat McGrath was talking about Debbie Harry so it had a punk look to it - it was really a little rebellious and fun - it gave the makeup some spirit. "It is quite daring isn't it?" Pat said to us backstage at Gucci. As designer Frida Giannini explained "I wanted to create a balance between the 50's and a modern age with the rock star and pop star like Deborah Harry, Madonna, David Bowie and others"

Allure Backstage Spring 2008 hair trends - Messy Updos. Proof that updos don't have to be uptight: check out this season's easy, undone buns. This season at show after show hair stylists loosened up the texture and gave the hair a more wispy quality. As Eugene Souleiman explained his idea for the hair at Dolce & Gabbana was in complete contrast to the makeup, "its something much much softer, drier, more sensual. It's not a bun, it's not a structured bun".

What is great about this messy undo is you can do it, it does not take a lot of work. It actually uses the imperfection that most people have and takes that to its advantage as Eugene Souleiman confessed to us "there is absolutely no technique to this what so ever".

The hair at Giambattista Valli was completely gorgeous - one of the best looks of the Spring 2008 season. Orlando Pita was the hair stylist at the show and explains that because of the volume in the clothes they wanted to do something up - "I try to let my hairdos, even like here be a little on the simple side and a little bit undone so it looks more like today".

Allure Backstage Spring 2008 makeup trends - Matte Pink Lips.  It's one of the most feminine looks of the Spring 2008 season.  Makeup artists swapped the pink glosses of the past for cool toned pink lipsticks. And whether the lipstick was cool or vibrant it gave off a real hint of attitude.

The lipstick at Burberry was this great, really pale colour and it took the whole vibrancy of the natural lip color down a bit and so it made her look a little tougher than she ordinarily does. As Burberry Beauty Creative Consultant Wendy Rowe explained backstage - "she's a luxurious warrior, it's an easy look - she's got a bit of an attitude, she's a little bit tougher - she knows what she wants and she is going to go and get it".

Spring 2008: No doubt—deep red crimson lips are daring and very unexpected for Spring. At many of the show, makeup artists made the nearly always matte lipstick feel informal by putting them on casually with a fingertip. There was a theme running through all the shows of a certain artsy-ness.  It was this really done up, artistic, urban girl.

Backstage at Dolce & Gabbana makeup artist Pat McGrath explained the inspiration

"..she's running around with the art crowd, she's very contemporary looking and she's very artistic. I think people are really excited about makeup and I think there's a whole lot going on with clubs and people just doing what they want to do and I think that whole freedom reflects what's going here backstage".

Allure Backstage Spring 2008 - Textured Hair.It's a tease: Rough hairstyles with volume complement this season's textured clothes. Textured Hair was of the biggest beauty trends at the Spring 2008 collections and it's one of our favourite looks for summer.

Hair stylists Luigi Murenu explains, "It's like dream hair - it's the kind of hair that every woman wants." Backstage at the fashion shows no one had straight hair as hairstylists bent, waved and teased hair to give it an airy, roughed up quality. At Proenza Schouler the clothes had a lot of texture so the hair had a lot of texture as well.

Allure Backstage Spring 2008 makeup trend. Colorful shadowsBright eyes—in nearly every shade of the rainbow—run the gamut from soft to full-on glittery. Nothing says spring more than color which is why this trend is our number one pick for the top trend of the season. Makeup artists dreamed in color this season, dabbing eyes with nearly every shade of the rainbow. Some stuck to a wash of pink and orange on the lids, while others rimmed all around the eyes in energetic shades of green, purple and blue.

Charlotte Tilbury used turquoise glitter on the eyes at Missoni,  "we're doing something a bit more rock and roll, something a little bit more Kate Moss, a little bit more destroyed makeup. At Michael Kors Dick Page used a violet liner, yellow gold highlight on the brow bone, orange on the outer corner of the eye, pink on the lid "so it looks like a little fruit salad effect".

Michael Kors said he loved the colours "Dick and I sat down and said this is all about this juicy face, so we are really playing with more colour on the eye than we ever have done before. This collection is really about celebrating sunshine and warm weather - optimistic in a word".
