Go backstage at Fendi Fall 2011 in Milan with designer Karl Lagerfeld, makeup artist Peter Philips, hairstylist Sam McKnight and top models Daphne Groeneveld, Constance Jablonski and Bianca Balti.

The Fendi woman is always confident and strong but for Fall 2011 she has an air of mystery about her.   Designer Karl Lagerfeld seems to always have the magic touch,  but this collection for Fendi is really one of his strongest yet – from the Mary Janes to the wild savage furs – everything about this show was desirable. It’s hard to believe it’s already been a year since the tragic death of British designer Alexander McQueen. As the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art gets ready to unveil the exhibit Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty on May 4th at the Met Ball, we take a look back at his final Paris show called “Plato’s Atlantis”.

When you pulled back the curtain backstage at a McQueen show you never knew what was going to happen, but you always knew it was going to be something out of this world. Our crew was at his last show in Paris on October 6, 2009 and were one of the lucky few that were invited to shoot backstage.

The show called Plato’s Atlantis was perhaps one of his most extraordinary – an sensory explosion of fashion, beauty, technology and art. Alexander McQueen may be gone but he has left us with some of the most powerful visual experiences the world of fashion will ever know.

From one of our favorite fashion sites – Nowness is a wonderful film about Peter Philips, Chanel’s “king of cosmetics” and the the brand’s Global Creative Director of Makeup. Peter Philips instinct for trend forecasting is unmatched. Since his appointment in 2008, the Belgian beauty guru has rolled out one hit after another—from his limited-edition nail varnish Jade, which sold for a breathless $100 a bottle on eBay at its peak, to his “temporary tattoos,” a project with Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel’s spring 2010 show, which had a waiting list of 3,589 names before the designs went on sale.

Peter Philips: Beautiful Dreamer on Nowness.com.

For today’s film, directors Jauretsi and Crystal Moselle visited the onetime makeup artist at his Manhattan home to discuss his early memories of his mother, Irving Penn’s light-sculpting ability, and the inspiration behind Philips’s robot-themed animation for Chanel, which has its world premiere on NOWNESS tomorrow.

Alexander McQueen was a creative genius and visionary and it’s impossible to imagine the world of fashion without him. The 40 year old award-winning British designer died on Thursday, February 11th at his London home.

McQueen liked to push people’s buttons. With the help of music-video producer Sam Gainsbury he transformed his catwalk shows into spectacular cinematic productions. The staging of his fashion shows were epic, intense productions that had something elemental – water, ice, fire, or live animals – taking you inside a world of his own creation, his shows transported you to another place. That was McQueen’s plan – he wanted you to feel breathless, shocked and full of emotion watching his show.

When you pulled back the curtain backstage at his show you never knew what was going to happen, but you always knew it was going to be something out of this world.

We will all really miss him.
